It’s summer, it’s hot, let’s cook!

Man it’s hot here.  Something like the mid 30s C (90s F) here in beautiful B.C.  As I was just on the deck I was thinking, hmm it’s hot, the sun is really bright … solar cooking!  I just found an interesting site–http://solarcooking.org/–that has info and plans for outdoor solar cookers.  Please, please note that these puppies get really hot.  If I can roast a hot dog in a couple mins, think about what it can do to your hand.  And don’t stare at them either.

There are other fun things to do outside, especially with the kids, to show how amazingly powerful our sun is.  Yes, there is the classic magnifying glass stuff, but let’s skip that.  How about make sun tea for a drink.  Simple … jar, tea bags, water, sun.  Let it sit.  That’s it.  Or take two jars of water.  Leave one clear, wrap another in black paper.

Sure it’s simple, but a nice way to illustrate colour-heat relations.

Okay, that should do it for now, where’s my cold drink?

Well, I should say that you have shown different approaches to the problem of sunny weather! While others are thinking which of their organs may suffer from the heat-you enjoy the life! That’s great! Thank you fot this post!

I remember one summer when we lived near Hanford, Washington. The power plant had a science center and sponsored daily activities for kids. One of the projects was making a solar food drier out of a box, foil paper and plastic wrap!

And it’s amazing isn’t it how powerful the sun is!
